Theboy waited at the door and breathed deeply and

audibly. After a pause, he awkwardly walked into the room. Jeremiah’s attention was finally drawn from his vigil by the sound from within his apartment. The soldier’s eyes slipped from the darkness of the night to scan the dim apartment, wondering at this intrusion.

The teenage boy stood in front of him, dressed in an expensive eastern robe. He had long brown hair oiled with scents. His face was smooth and freckled, and a keen pair of brown eyes looked deferentially down.

When he realized Jeremiah had noticed him, the youth let the fabric gown slip away and stood naked before the soldier. His slim, compact body was oiled, and the skin glistened in the torchlight of the apartment.

“What are you doing?” asked Jeremiah. “The Lord Elias sent me… to comfort you,” said the boy.

“Robe yourself, boy, I have no interest in you,” Jeremiah said coldly.

“Am I not pleasing to you?” asked the boy, unsure.

Yet Jeremiah was no longer listening. He returned his attention to the night, always looking south even though the only thing he could see anymore were the fires that burned in the campsites of the Northmen. They were everywhere now, and late at night the soldier felt as if he had slipped into the fires of hell itself.

“I understand, Sire,” said the boy carefully, breaking his thoughts. “I’ll send Grabo, the Phraician. Six foot of muscle and hung like a stallion. He will pleasure you.”

As the boy awkwardly bent over and picked up his robe, Jeremiah realized his thoughts felt scrambled.

He watched the boy cover his nakedness and turn to leave.

“Can you tend wounds?” Jeremiah asked.

“Sire?” asked the slave, looking perplexed.

“I’m bleeding,” said Jeremiah. “Can you stitch a wound?”
